In lieu of the MRT cards, Globe came up with a chip called the
G-pass that will turn MRT commuters ticketless. It debuted last July 2006 but was limited to AYALA_CUBAO trips. Finally, it is now available in all stations. So I got one for myself last wednesday to
try and check its perks and "mis-perks." Here are my insights:
Perks:
1. RE-LOADABLE
The chip is reloadable through G-Cash or plain cash via G-pass booths
2. PRACTICAL
Unlike the MRT stored value card which costs a 100 bucks, you can load the G-pass with an amount good for a single journey if you don't have the money. A minimum of 10 bucks can be bought from the G-pass booths (tough you have to pay an initial 100 bucks for the chip alone woth a 50 bucks statring load).
3. HASSLE-FREE
The G-pass booths are line-free (primarily 'cause it isn't that in demand yet). So if you are in a hurry you can use your pre-loaded G-pass or you can easily reload it via the booths instead of waiting in line or cramming coins into the crappy vending machine.
4. USER-FRIENDLY
Using the G-pass is so easy. Just simply put it face down on the chip reader and your good to go. No need t0 decide or opt for a trial and error in determining which is the right way to use the MRT cards (especially those without any arrow on it).
5. COOL
It is kinda cool 'cause your one of the few ones using the techie chip instead of the old-school magnetic cards. Plus, in the near future, you would be able to use the chip to do transactions with stores who will have had adapted the G-pass system by then.
Mis-perks:
1. TOO SMALL
can be easily misplaced, dropped, lost or even stolen. I dropped mine and it rolled in the station. too much shame running around for it.
2. CARD READER DEPENDENT
if the card readers are down, so are you. There is no way for you to use the G-pass chip for it doesnt share the MRT's main system.
3. MORE EXPENSIVE
in using the G-pass chip, you are cursed with a 5% increment placed on the usual MRT fares.
For instance: TAFT Ave to Quezon Ave
--usual cost: 15 pesos
--G-pass cost: 15.75
4. NO BONUSES
Unlike the stored value MRT cards, you won't get any bonus rides. Once you are under 20 bucks you won't be able to use the G-pass.
I realized, sticking to MRT cards is fine, though having a G-pass in your pocket won't hurt either. So why don't you try it?
